DUDE ... macs are SO COOL. =] using our g5 right now. CRAZY NICE. today was really cool. angel and i checked in students for a testmasters lsat prep class. basically all we had to do was check people off and tell them to call the office if they owed money. it was great ... lots of fun, actually ... and they asked me to help on tuesday, too! maybe this will become like a temp job type thing. hahaha. i wouldn't mind. =P had an awesome time talking with angel during the dead times. we talked about churches and parachurches (like aacf). one of the problems we see with aacf is that some people use it as a substitute for church. one of the reasons why fellowships are needed is because churches aren't totally meeting the needs of the people. i may go off a little ... tell me if you think my views are whack. haha. anyway, i believe that it's the church's responsibility to build up Christians ... to help them in their walks and such. the church should set up accountability and discipleship relationships ... right now a lot of fellowships do that kind of thing - which is good - but at the same time, since these are functions that i see should be part of the church, some people are substituting parachurches for churches. the church is DEFINITELY more important than the parachurch. first off, it's churches that are mentioned in the Bible, not parachurches. churches are important because people can really find a community that wants to see them grow. churches last longer than campus fellowships, too. i've heard it said that most people that only go to fellowships (and not churches) end up going to neither a church nor a fellowship when they graduate. it's important to find that community to belong in ... i think the purpose of the parachurch (or the fellowship) should be primarily for outreach. that's my personal belief. this is interesting because by the very term "fellowship", it would seem that our club is dealing with Christians ... because i think the term "fellowship" is used in the context of the early church. furthermore, this belief that the purpose of AACF should be outreach is interesting because my ministry at aacf next year is the spiritual foundations ministry - a ministry aiming to help AACFers in their Christian walks. i feel that the spiritual foundations ministry IS a good thing, however, due to the fact that we do not live in an ideal situation. the fact is people ARE substituting fellowship for churches; churches ARE NOT always meeting the needs of its members ... that's why we need the accountability, the discipleship, the messages at AACF, a parachurch. still, if our aim is to make the purpose of AACF primarily outreach, how should we make our meetings more seeker-friendly, and less like a church (so as to not take the place of a church)? (NOTE: i hesitate using the term "seeker-friendly" after talking to my friend zinnia, the outreach coordinator next year at aacf. her point is we shouldn't neccessarily make our meetings "seeker-friendly" because we're called to preach the truth. we shouldn't shy away from the truth of the gospel because we don't do the changing of hearts; that's God's job. all we can do is be faithful to preaching the Word.) so i talked to people about how to make AACF more outreach-oriented. i got a lot of different responses. someone suggested getting rid of the messages and speakers and instead having testimonies. some people said get rid of the singing. some people said to get rid of small groups. some people suggested making the meetings more participatory. someone said to get rid of offering and instead fund aacf buy having people make pledges. all these were interesting ideas ... although i don't know if i agree with all of them. i think it's important that we have speakers. if we don't have older, more mature Christians speaking to us Christians, how can we go out and reach seekers? furthermore, seekers still need to hear the gospel. as for getting rid of worship through songs (because some non-Christians say it makes them feel uncomfortable) i think it's good for seekers to see Christians worshipping God unashamed. i think God can use the times of worship to touch these seekers, and to show them the joy that can be found in worshipping our loving God. i found the motion to get rid of small groups EXTREMELY intriguing because i agree that small groups (and discipleship, for that matter) should be functions of the church. i think in that regard AACF could be somewhat taking the role of the church. however, as i stated earlier, i believe that it is good that we have a small group ministry and a discipleship ministry because some AACFers would not have this need met otherwise. again, i think ideally churches would take care of Christians' spiritual growth, but since we live in a not ideal society, inreach ministries are good and even necessary sometimes. anyway ... yeah. it's interesting. i think we have to agree on the purpose of the church and the purpose of parachurches before we can go forth planning our different ministries. we don't all want to pull in different directions. =] this, again, is just my view of churches and parachurches ... i'm sure their are many different views. lemme know what you guys think. =] like the willow leaves -bj

so the same day i get an interview for another job, i get turned down for the job i just interviewed for. maybe that's just God opening and closing doors. another lesson in faith, i guess, so no worries. =] i'm actually kind of relieved. it would have been very difficult commuting to their facility during the school year, that with all my classwork and aacf stuff. =] now we'll see how this princeton review gig pans out. =D -bj
okay, i got the DAVE BARNES cd. here's my review on his cd, Brother, Bring the Sun. IT'S SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOD! remember how i said that stephen speaks was my favorite cd? well ... i dunno. this one might be just as good. if you're my friend (*ahem, ahem*) you will buy this cd. =P well ... ask me to borrow my cd and THEN buy it once you hear how great it is. =]]] dave barnes' music is a perfect blend of jazz, soul, and pop. each song is immediately catchy and gets stuck in your head. here's a song-by-song review. 1) Crazyboutya crazyboutya is probably the most rhythmic, upbeat song of the cd. it makes you wanna get up and dance. this is a MUST HEAR. 2) until you on first listen, until you was my favorite song on the cd. it's just a sweet song where barnes sings "love was kept from me like a secret and i swore that i was through until you." okay, i'm a big sap, but it's a very melodic chorus. GREAT SONG. 3) grace's amazing hands this song is also amazing. (haha, get it?) but it plays with the wording of grace's amazing hands and amazing grace. definitely a spiritual song. (dave barnes is a Christian. =] ) some of the lyrics in this song are kind of ... erm ... interesting. "grace's amazing hands, they hold me / they're as soft as a feather bed" ... but at other times, extremely profound. "grace's amazing hands, they're ugly / they are bruised by the blows i have blown / she knows well i don't deserve her / but she laughs and says that's the way love goes" ... this is another GREAT song, although not one of the stronger ones on the CD. still AMAZING. just goes to show what an AWESOME CD THIS IS! 4) can't grow tired of your love this song has amazing jazz rifts. i think this is one of the most catchy songs on the cd ... although the chorus is somewhat repetitive. 5) the l.a. song i love the l.a. song because of the story it tells. it tells the story of the proverbial "bad boys" and the careful girl that always seems to fall for the bad boys. it's a very mellow song with an mediterranean guitar vibe. a very subdued song, but very, very nice. 6) prayer of the saints. great guitaring. this song is probably my least favorite on the cd, but it's still catchy. his voice is slightly muffled, which adds to the jazz feel. undeniably catchy 7) your love will never change probably the most blatantly spiritual song on the cd. this is a beautiful song reflecting on the love of God. dave writes "they tell me that you hold the world together / not from guilt, but pleasure / and you somehow know my name / and your love will never change" i really love this song. it's gorgeous, and dave barnes' voice is full of emotion. great, great, great song. 8) what am i gonna do kinda sounds like a john mayer song. (that's a good thing.) crazy awesome guitar intro. slightly country vibe. very happy. =] sorry, the reviews are getting short 'cuz michael wants me to go to safeway w/ him. 9) nothing fancy this is probably my favorite song because it's the sappiest. i'll just post part of the lyrics. they'll speak for themself. "there's nothing fancy about the way i love you / there's nothing you could not find in any other man / there's nothing fancy bout the way i love you / but i love you as hard as i can / there's no good reason for the way you love me / but you're my walking dream come true / there's no good reason for the way you love me / but i thank God that you do ... there's nothing fancy bout the way i love you / but it sure is fancy how you love me." that coupled with an incredible low-key melody ... man. awesome. superb. 10( the inbetween I LOVE THIS SONG TOO! it's a song about DTRs! (haha, is that what they're called?) this song has rhythm. it's kinda swingy-ish. =P don't know how to describe it. "tell me if we're hot or cold, baby / just save me from the inbetween." i think we all need songs like that now and then. are we friends or more than just friends. haha. =]]]]] good song. 11) on a night like this the only piano driven song, an AMAZING way of ending an awesome cd. very short and sweet. it's less than two minutes long ... but again, dave barnes' voice shines ... he has a definite jazz vibe to his voice, but it shines on slow songs like this. "on a night like this i could fall in love with you." sweet and simple. definitely one of my favorites. perfect harmonies too. THE END! AWESOME CD! BUY IT! on a night like this -bj
ADVICE, please. =] Dear Bryan Lee: Congratulations!?Based on your qualifications and your quiz score(s), we'd like to invite you to attend a group audition with The Princeton Review. ? At this group interview,?you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your teaching skills and style.?Please prepare a?five minute interactive?teaching presentation.?While your teaching subject is completely your choice (it can range from how to tie a neck-tie to something a bit more academic like history), please make sure you choose something that lends itself to a group dynamic. We will be looking more at your style than the content of your instruction.?We are looking for candidates who can communicate a topic in a clear, exciting, and fun way. Show us your energy and enthusiasm, and be sure to emphasize the interactive nature of effective teaching. For the audition, we will ask you to come into our office and do a 3-minute teaching presentation on a topic of your choice. The object of this audition is to show us how engaging you can be and how well you can instruct, so you should pick a fun topic that involves several steps and is hands-on. We're also looking to see if you can take something hard and make it understandable. Examples include: How to make the perfect ice cream sundae, how to chop an onion without crying, or the social and cultural significance of the chicken dance. *** so, the problems. 1) group interview. UGH. i hear those are bad ... i'll be teaching people that are also trying to get the job. =/ it'll be intense and stressful. i've heard cases of sabotage. =-O .... 2) five minute presentation. yowza! anyone know of something interesting i could teach, because i sure don't. haha. 3) the interview is scheduled for mid-july. i should hear back from my other job place before that. this would only be a problem if i get the other job. i'd rather work at the princeton review than at the other place. 4) just because i do well on the interview doesn't mean i'll get the job. =/ after the interview comes "rigorous training" where "only the best" get the job. =/ haha ... so a lot to consider. i dunno. i have to confirm whether or not i can make the group audition to ensure my place. haha. hmmmmmmmm. =/ until you -bj
