good stuff in Amos. =]

"He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth - the LORD God Almighty is his name." (Amos 4:13)

"...who turns blackness into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land - the LORD is his name." (Amos 5:8)

"The Lord, the LORD Almighty, he who touches the earth and it melts, and all who live in it mourn - the whole land rises like the Nile, then sinks like the river of Egypt - he who builds his lofty palace in the heavens and sets its foundation on the earth, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land - the LORD is his name" (Amos 9:5-6)

today ...

midterm was ... eh. kinda tricky. don't really know how i did ...

in cs, people voted on the issue of gay marriage ... approx 50% agree that it's okay in sf ... 25% say it's not okay, 25% says to let the courts decide ...

carebear meeting went kinda long today ... even though we only planned the new prayer partner ministry ... i'm paired up with janette. =] we got our first five people to pray for/with ... agnes, aimee, albert, alex, and alice. =] (yeah, we divided it up alphabetically) ... we should be getting a bunch more people later, too ... so basically we're supposed to meet with these people sometime this semester and ask how we can pray for them and stuff like that ... should be cool. =]

i was planning to go home today, but the carebear meeting ran long ... plus vicky and i had to do some preliminary planning for our photo rally next saturday. pray that it doesn't rain! oh man ... i hope it doesn't ...

after the carebear meeting and doing some planning for the photo rally, angus, vicky, alex and i went back to college & dwight (tim & alex's place) to hangout ... we played texas hold'em with mahjong chips ... i won. w00t! haha ... i'm pretty good at bluffing ... and reading people. =P

tim was trying to help me work on my guitar strumming, too ... good stuff.

stayed there until around 9:30 ... then i went to asian ghetto to eat with angus ... had time to talk and see how he's doing ... (he's the one who became a Christian this past year) ... kinda shared my testimony with him ... just had a good time ... =]

now i'm gonna start my cs project. boooo ... project 2 of 6 or so ... bleh. =/ i'll probably sleep early tonight, too. i'm tired. =[

today while i was walking to the bank, i saw some FOOTHILL FRESHIES! dude, i love those guys. i so wish i had gone to aacf last year ... and had a group of people my year going to aacf with me ... those foothill freshies are so tight ... joyce was waving like a maniac ... jeff said "sup bryan" ... john gave me a nod ... it made me =]]]. heh heh. on a side note, don't you think it's weird saying 'hi' to someone with the same name as you? i saw brian bui today ... i said, "hey brian" ... he said, "oh, hey ... uhm ... bryan." haha. i thought it was kinda weird. =P that's why i call brian toy, boy toy ... or little one. it makes it easier. =]

erk? =P

so ee40 labs are stupid. haha ... grrr .... they take so long ... and they don't even count! =P what is with that? haha ... so no one was able to finish the lab ... everyone had randomness on their oscilloscopes ... and our lab t.a., jack, didn't seem to know what to do either ... it was just a poorly constructed lab. this group that tiff and i sometimes go to for help ... girl: so what was the point of this lab? guy: to learn about op-amps! girl: you mean to learn how they don't work? =P yeah ... finally, our lab t.a. says that if we did the first part, we'll get full credit ... haha ... dude, the first part itself was so hard. =/

left to do tonight:
cs lab / bank / study for ee20 midterm. =/

from GodThoughts:

As we enter the twenty-first century, the issues of human sexuality have never been more widely confused or hotly debated. As I write today, the constitutionality and appropriateness of "Gay Marriage" is being debated at the highest levels of government in the United States of America...and the world is watching. Yes, perhaps the most controversial aspect of all sexual issues is that of homosexuality. Is homosexuality a sin? Is anyone born gay? I believe these questions demand a response from Bible-believing Christians. Fortunately, God has chosen to address these issues very clearly and directly in His word. So, what does the Bible say?

GodThoughts

The following GodThoughts is written from the United States of America, a country whose pledge of allegiance includes, "One nation, under God," and whose coins include the inscription, "In God we trust." At the time these phrases were penned more than two hundred years ago, the "God" described was clearly understood to be the "God" of the Bible. Today, a debate is raging at the highest levels of the United States Federal Government as to the constitutionality and appropriateness of homosexual marriage.

"Gay Marriage?"

"Do not be deceived..."
I Corinthians 6:9

What do I believe about "Gay marriage?" Well, the Bible says, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination" (Leviticus 18:22). The scripture includes homosexuality in a list of other things including, fornication, idolatry, and adultery (see 1 Corinthians 6:9-11). Each of these things the Bible calls...sin.

"Let the marriage bed be undefiled."
Hebrews 13:4

Asking me to support "Gay marriage" is asking me to support something that the God of the Bible is clearly against (No, I didn't say God is against homosexuals. God loves all of us equally, and unconditionally without respect to sexual practice. However, God calls homosexuality sin...and God is against all sin).

What do I believe about "Gay marriage?"...I believe what the Bible says (see also, Romans 1:22-28).

What Does the Bible Say About...
Homosexuality?

Perhaps the first important Biblical truth to establish is that God does not show partiality. "For there is no partiality with God" (Romans 2:11). The Bible clearly teaches that God loves all people equally, regardless of sexual practice, and this love is unconditional (see John 3:16). Jesus said, "All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out" (John 6:37), and this most certainly includes the homosexual.

Beginning with the Old Testament, there are at least two passages of significance regarding this subject. Firstly, Leviticus 18:22 says, "You shall not lie with a male as you would a female; it is an abomination." And then Leviticus 20:13 proclaims, If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act..." Yes, it is clear, and undeniably Biblical, that homosexuality is both "detestable," and "abominable" to the Lord. These terms indicate that God hates homosexuality. Why? Because God is committed to hating anything that hurts the people that He loves. God views homosexuality as a perversion of His original intent for sexual expression, and the Bible teaches that ALL SEXUAL PERVERSION wounds those who participate (see Romans 1:22-28).

Additionally, there are at least three New Testament passages that speak to this issue as well. First of all, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."

And then, 1 Timothy 1:8-10: "But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching."

Contrary to "sound" teaching. This word translated "sound" literally means, "health giving." Yes, both the Old and New Testament's are equally clear and concise. The Bible, from start to finish is completely congruent in its teaching on this subject. According to the Bible, homosexuality is "unrighteous," "rebellious," "lawless," "ungodly, "unholy," "profane," and "unhealthy." The Bible teaches that homosexuality is sin, and it is God's will that ALL sin be acknowledged and repented of (see 1 John 1:6-9). Further, the Bible tells us that Jesus was crucified for our sins (see 1 Corinthians 15:3), and homosexuality is a part of that for which Jesus died.

Is Anyone Born a Homosexual?

Throughout the centuries many have claimed to have been born a homosexual - as opposed to a heterosexual. Is this true? Well, to put this question in an accurate Biblical context, we need to include it with the other behaviors listed in the previous verses that we have discussed. Namely, "fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, swindlers, those who kill their fathers or mothers, murderers, immoral men, kidnappers, liars and perjurers" (see above).

So the broader question involves the determination of whether or not human beings are born with inherent predispositions toward such behaviors. What we do know is that all of mankind is born with a "sinful nature." Psalm 14:3 says, "There is no one who does good, not even one." And Romans 3:23 reiterates, "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." Yes, the Bible clearly teaches that all humans from the fall of Adam and Eve (except for Jesus), are born with an inherent predisposition for sin.

However...Biblically, to say that someone is born a homosexual is, in principle, the same as claiming that an individual is born a kidnapper or liar or adulterer (see above). No, according to the Bible, sin is always a choice. Indeed, there can be generational pre-dispositions toward certain sins (see Deuteronomy 5:9), and there are certainly environmental and cultural and familial influences that promote various types of behaviors. Nonetheless, sin is not a disease, as some suggest, in the same way that cancer is a disease. The difference? People do not choose to have cancer, but people ALWAYS have the choice whether or not they will sin. No, sin is not an issue of genetics, it is an issue of the will.

All of us have the ability to, "Go and sin no more." A capsule of John 8: 3-11 gives us a vivid and concise illustration of Jesus' perspective on sexual sin. "A woman caught in adultery...He who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her...Woman, where are they (those who condemned her)?...Neither do I condemn you...From now on sin no more."

#1. It is not our role to condemn.
#2. Jesus does not condemn us.
#3. Sin is always sin, regardless of how we choose to spin it.

In review, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and 1 Timothy 1: 8-10 make no distinction between homosexuality and any other sin that separates us from God. And there is forgiveness available for ALL SIN, including homosexuality.

oh yeah, yesterday at aacf the care team (aka carebears ... but i like care team better =P) was supposed to try to find a person of the opposite sex to partner up with for the new prayer-partner ministry ... heh heh ... i found someone, but i cheated. i asked janette ... who likes getting involved in stuff. =P we were supposed to ask someone who normally doesn't get involved ... i asked a lot of those people ... like joyce and helen ... but i didn't want to force them into doing something they don't want to ... so i think janette is my prayer partner now. =]

today was the wettest day of my berkeley career. i stepped out at 8:45 for my 9am class and it was POURING! i mean, the streets were flooded. i stepped off the sidewalk and into a puddle up to my ankles. it was gross ... the people next to me just laughed. everyone was shouting, "this is crazy!" ... i had stuck two clean tissues in my pocket before leaving my apt. when i got into my classroom, they had disintegrated in my pocket due to all the moisture that had seeped through my pant pockets ... it was wet, cold, and yucky. kinda fun, though. haha ... i was laughing most of the way to class 'cuz it was just soooooooo bad. =P luckily i like rain ... but it was very uncomfortable in class 'cuz everytime i'd move my leg, i'd feel the wetness and coldness of my pant leg. bleh. =P

i met with eric chak, my discipler today. awwwwwwww man. it's so great. so mid-last semester, i filled out a form requesting a discipler. one of the questions was, "do you have someone that you'd like to have as your discipler?" ... i had a couple of guys in mind ... calvin, the men's ministry coordinator, calvin, the small group coordinator ... maybe dan cheng, the praise team coordinator ... but i was too shy to actually put a name down. i think that was all part of God's perfect plan. when calvin told me that eric was looking for a disciplee ... i was excited.

you know how every once in a while you meet someone and you just click right off the bat? i mean, usually you have to get to know someone for a while before you feel a connection ... but every so often you'll meet someone whose personalities complement yours so well that you just click. that doesn't happen to me very often ... i was trying to think of instances like that from my elementary/middle school/ high school days ... it's kinda hard 'cuz i've known most of you ccsers since you were little ... i'd say eric cho and i just clicked right away ... remember katherine? i think i clicked with her pretty quickly.

here in berkeley, i'd say i just clicked with steve z. and yeah, now i've found that i have an immediate connection with my discipler, eric. i dunno ... it's just really easy talking to him and just sharing. i know that God gave me a discipler that is perfect for me ... so yeah, we spent the first hour just going through James 1 ... and then we spent the next half-hour to forty-five minutes just talking and stuff. it was really good.

oh yeah, eric got into ucla med school. congrats, bro. =] he's just glad he gets to stay in california. =]

on a side note, i wish more of you cbcers came to berkeley ... heh heh ... it'd be cool if i could introduce you to some of my berkeley friends. i think think you'd like them a lot. =] i think they'd like you guys a lot, too. =P

on another side note, i find that i get along with likeable people. haha. alright, that's stupid. i'm sure everyone likes likeable people ... hmmm ... well, usually the people that identify with best are the laid-back, slightly quiet, easy-going type people. usually not the "popular" people, per se ... but people that everyone usually likes. the people that i've been developing closer relationships with here at berkeley are usually these types of people ... plus they're usually people i can joke around with ... and they're usually slightly quirky, too. i guess i'm drawn to people like myself ... or something. =P

i think one of my gifts is the ability to relate to people ... usually 'cuz i see a part of myself in most people i meet ... but i'm finding that there are a lot of people that are very similar to me here in berkeley ... tim, boytoy, eric, steve, esther ... =P i'm trying to think of people that are like me from ccs/cbc ... ummm ... maybe vir, ummmm ... curtis maybe. hmmm ... interesting. can you think of any?

so work is piling up ... next week will be a killer ... a cs project, two homework sets, and two midterms ... plus three labs, 1 pre-lab, 1 at-home lab write-up. bah. this week ... i have to catch up on some cs reading, finish the ee40 hw, do the ee40 pre-lab ... study for my ee20 midterm on friday ... and start preparing for next week. =P

it's amazing how much time God gives me ... i have so much homework to do, and i'm involved in so much stuff ... but God still gives me the time to get everything done without getting stressed out. thanks, God. =]

i'm missing a lot of my cbc/ccs friends right now. miss you all ... especially vir, megs, and my h2o ct. =] thinking 'bout you guys.

the two sides of my brain need to have a meeeeetang

so yesterday i was talking to vicky ... and i mentioned to her how i'd like to bring a car up to berkeley ... especially if i'm serving in some capacity, like being a small group leader. she asked me why. i told her that if i were a small group leader, for example, i'd like to be able to drive my small group home (when it's raining or even otherwise), be able to take them out to dinner sometimes, be able to drive them if they needed to get somewhere or run errands ... vicky said that that's just a guy hangup. she said that in the girl small groups, they leaders don't worry so much about being a provider ... they care more about the way the group is running and about each girls' emotions ... she said that being a provider is just a guy thing. i dunno ... i guess it is. maybe tim and alex have been rubbing off on me too much. alex spends a good chunk of every wednesday night buying food for his small group. (he makes / buys expensive stuff, too.) tim's started cooking for our small group this semester ... both usually drive their small group members home, too ... but i dunno ... i really appreciate those gestures ... and it's something that i wanna do if i serve in some capacity next year.
