drowning. caught up in the storms of life. tossed by seas of worry and regret. sinking.

ever feel that way?

winds beat down, waves pound, the sky is dark. struggling to stay afloat.

then in the darkness, a shadow approaches. a voice calls out.

don't worry. don't struggle. come to me. you'll be okay.

but i'm drowning. i'm sinking. save me.

oh you of little faith. trust me. you'll be okay. come to me.

the waves ... they're too high. the wind ... it's too strong.

come to me. believe in me. you'll be okay.

help me to believe. i'm sinking. i'm drowning. i can't get to you. i can't walk on water.

no, but i can. and i'll carry you.

suddenly the waves fade below. the dark clouds shrink and disappear. held tightly in loving arms, in a haven of rest above the raging storm below.

what kind of man is this that even the wind and waves obey him?

what kind of man is this that walks on water and carries me?

Jesus Christ - the Calmer of the Storm, the Lover of my Soul.

There. Just a little to the right.
No. Too far.
A little more.
There we go. Dead centered.
And the countdown begins.
Nope, nothing special; no big deal. Eight - no, ninth time doing it.
Showtime.
Three, two, one ...

Bang.

Thought it would've been more of a rush.

Eh. Maybe next time.

too far gone

happy new year ... erm ... somewhere. not here yet, though ... steve sent me a happy new year from calexico ... in CALIFORNIA ... but he claimed it was the new year in hong kong ... so i'll forgive him.

so i went to vir's today ... she told me not to post about this, but it was slightly amusing. so she decides to use her little whipper-stick thingy and make a cake for jazz's b-day. so, we put the blades and stuff in ... and we use it to mix the cake batter ... haha ... as she's about to operate it, i say, "i wonder if this splatters" ... and just then, some batter flies onto the floor. heh heh ... anyhoo ... the cakes were made, then we started to make the frosting. vir, being the genius that she is, decided to melt down some cool whip, add mandarin oranges, and then add some gelatin. hmmm ... so we boil down some gelatin, add it to the orange-cool whip mixture ... and it starts growing this long film-like substance ... it was stringy ... kinda like snake skin floating in milk. haha ... so then we decide to put it into a big pot and boil it all down ... so we start boiling ... and it turns very runny ... then we stick it in the freezer. deciding to scrap that, vir decides to make homemade frosting. HAHAHA ... lots of sugar ... and a double burner. so then we used her mixer-thingy to mix the concoction on the stove ... hahah ... that was incredibly messy ... splattered everywhere ... we took it off the burner, mixed some more, splattered some more ... and it looked like milk. it was runny ... and yeah. hahaha ... so we go back to the mixture in the freezer ... it's turned into jello. we take vir's mixer thingy (it's very versatile) and scramble the jello until it kinda becomes lumpy pudding ... =P then we stick that between the two layers of the cake. haha ... ummm ... the jello like pudding (or pudding like jello) looked like a cross between potato salad, cottage cheese, and vomit. hahaha ... it tasted alright, though ... anyhoo ... then we soaked the frosting in icewater to try to get it to thicken ... and it sorta got to a milkshake-like consistency .... but vir had to go to cbc's watchnight service ... so we left it in the fridge and left. haha ... if anyone tried the cake, let me know how it tasted ... i'm sure it tasted alright ... but it sure looked kinda strange. haha. =]

yay. my sister just bought the latest steve martini book. =] hooooooooRAAAAAAAY!

i find it appalling that no one commented on what a tragedy it is that stephen speaks has broken up. thus, i will review the cd for you all. but FIRST, the top cds i have discovered this year ... (not necessarily released this year ... i just got them this year.)

1. Stephen Speaks - No More Doubt (review below)
2. Switchfoot - The Beautiful Letdown
This CD was named the 2nd best CD of the year by one of the reviewers at the San Jose Mercury News ... That's pretty incredibly considering that Switchfoot is a Christian band. In their song "Redemption", they croon "Your scars are bigger than these doubts of mine ..." Although most of their music does not distinctly reflect the band's Christianity, the messages of the songs are all positive. The CD reflects a common theme of there being more to life than just living and dying and pursuing worldly pleasures. The lead single "Meant to Live" reflects this theme. "We were meant to live for so much more ..." Similarly, in my favorite track on the CD, "Gone", Jon Foreman, the lead vocalist, sings that we have to make the most of our time here on earth because "today will soon be gone - like yesterday is gone, like history is gone, just try and prove me wrong and pretend that you're immortal ..." it's a very light and cheery song. the cd also includes a song from the mandy moore movie, "a walk to remember." =] an excellent cd.
3. Dave Koz - The Dance
i started getting into jazz music this past year ... dave koz's the dance is amazing. he's an awesome saxophonist. his saxophone playing also adds so much to the songs with vocals, songs especially of note are the title track, "you are me, i am you" and his duet with chris bottie.
Honorable Mention: Casting Crowns (self-titled)
the cd opens with the question "what if God's people prayed?" seeing the news of what's going on in America and in the world, it's a poignant question. the song "if we are the body" is a rebuke to the church. the lead vocalist sings "if we are the body, why aren't His arms reaching? why aren't His hands healing? why aren't His words teaching? if we are the body, why aren't His feet going? why is His love not showing them there is a way? there is a way." awesome stuff. the first half of the cd is a lot different from the 2nd half. the first half of the cd seems to be addressed to the church. it's meant to get Christians in America thinking. the second half of the cd is more worship-oriented. the last song is especially memorable. "Your love is extravagant; Your friendship - it is intimate." coupled with a catchy piano-driven melody, the song is a weeeeeeenar.

Best Love Song: "Out of My League" and "Passenger Seat" (tie) - both by Stephen Speaks
when i heard both of these songs for the first time, i knew i'd buy Stephen Speaks' CD ... just 'cuz i was so in love with these two songs. i want both of these songs played at my wedding, although "Passenger Seat" may not work as well ... but both songs made me tear slightly because the songs seemed so heartfelt. in "out of my league", tj mccloud and rockwell ryan simply sing "i love her with all that i am, and my voice shakes along with my hands ... 'cuz it's frightening to be swimming in this strange sea, but i'd rather be here than on land. yes, she's all that i see and she's all that i need, and i'm out of my league once again." in passenger seat, the guys sing of how awesome it is driving in the car with the love of your life sitting right next to you ... "i hear my heart - it beats so loud ... trying to tell her simply that i've got all that i need right here in the passenger seat ..." the simple melodies and the passionate vocals make both of these songs some of the best music i've ever heard. i've probably played those two songs close to fifty times in one week at my apartment ... chi and michael can probably sing the songs by heart 'cuz i've played them so much. =]

Best Contemporary Christian Song of the year: Casting Crown's "Who am I"
i guess i just like this song for personal reasons ... it never ceases to amaze me that God chooses to love sinners ... that He sent His son to die for sinners. the song is just a reminder that "i am a flower quickly fading - here today and gone tomorrow, a wave tossed in the ocean, a vapor in the wind. still You hear me when i'm calling. Lord, You catch me when i'm falling, and You've told me who i am - i am Yours." it reminds me that my worth does not comes from anything i've done, but my worth stems from who i am in Christ. i have worth because God loves me and because i am His.

Best Worship Song: Matt Redman's "Blessed Be Your Name."
wow, i've learned so many new songs this year at aacf ... but this Matt Redman song i first learned at h2o. i just like the message that we should praise God at all times - through good times and through bad. it's such a joy just singing this song to God. i love lifting my hands to Him and just singing at the top of my lungs "You give and take away, You give and take away. My heart will choose to say, Lord, blessed be Your name."

yay. that concludes my musical review of 2003. on to my review of Stephen Speaks' "no more doubt."

i first discovered stephen speaks when i went to my aacf small group leader's website ... he has some music files of him singing various songs ... i clicked on "passenger seat" and i really liked the song. then i went to the stephen speaks website and heard their version of it. it was SO GOOD. then i bought the cd. =] it's been in my cd player practically ever since. stephen speaks is a Christian band ... the song "Feet Wet" reflect our lack of faith and how we can't walk on water. the song "communion" reflects the Lord's Supper and how the elements represent our only hope of heaven. the song "puzzle pieces" remind us of our dependence on God and HIs sovereignty. "the pieces of this puzzle just don't fit without You." the group's love songs especially stand out, though. wow. i know that's not much of a review ... but the cd is awesome. if anyone wants to borrow my cd, i'll let you, and i guarantee you'll wanna buy it. =]

i went to the stephen speaks website and found that they had broken up. i then proceeded to rockwell ryan's site and listened to some of his stuff. (stephen speaks is a duo made up of rockwell ryan and tj mccloud) ... one thing immediately became apparent. rockwell has the soulful voice of the group ... but when i look at the songs he wrote himself for his solo album, the lyrics aren't as good as tj mccloud's ... nonetheless, i ordered rockwell ryan's cd ... 'cuz his guitar skills and voice are pretty good ... i'm still devastated that stephen speaks broke up, though ... ='[

not a chance

i did not realize that the band Stephen Speaks broke up!!! =[ i'm very sad. i really enjoyed their music ... their cd "no more doubt" is pretty awesome. one of the guys from stephen speaks, Rockwell Ryan, is releasing a solo cd, though. i'll probably pick it up 'cuz the songs sound similar to stephen speaks. =]
