do not believe ANYONE who says playing eight straight games of bowling is not painful. it is extremely painful. i had a pretty good day, though. my first five games were all above 100, with my high being 185. That beats my old record! WooHOO! ... the last three games were in the nineties ... i was in pain. seven days -bj
so. h2o was good as usual. it's nice seeing old faces that were back for spring break. my ct doubled in size when we added the davis people. :-D ... we talked about differnet evangelism styles in our ct. we took a quiz to see what style we were. my quiz said that i'm an "interpersonal" type. i guess this kinda shocked me because i'm not outgoing and i'm not a people person. well, at least i don't think i am. it's weird. do i know myself better or does everyone else know me better? everyone else seems to think i'm a very optimistic, people-oriented type of person. no one believes me when i tell them i'm shy and anti-social. hmmmm ... i wonder who's right ... after h2o i went to matt wu's house with the majority of h2o to just chill. they had an all-night lan party. i still don't see what people see in counter-strike. seems to me i'd get bored in ten minutes. anyhoo ... i watched the ring. that is one FREAKY movie. bah. i couldn't sleep all last night. SEVEN DAYS ... boooo ... i kept grabbing onto matt lee. haha. good thing i had a blanket to hide under ... my heart was racing for a full half-hour after watching that movie ... :-/ ... got home at 2 ... i plan to go bowling later today ... it's been a good spring break. i don't wanna go back to school. :-( ... she never sleeps ... -bj

so. today i saw a guy walking his dog across the street. you may be thinking, "where is Bryan going with this? He must have some witty story to tell. He can't be THIS random, can he?" Well, let me tell you, friends. I'm just random for random's sake. I'm not going to go anywhere with that statement. I'm just gonna leave you hanging. By the way, I didn't even see a guy walking his dog across the street today. So what have we learned? Bryan is random for random's sake, and Bryan randomly lies. Okay. Now that we've gotten that settled ... The week after the first week we're back from break is going to be KILLER. I mean, KILLER. More KILLER than any week I've ever had before. (*sigh*). I have a math midterm, a cs project, physics homework, a physics midterm ... hmmm ... it doesn't sound like much, but the cs project should take me 10+ hours ... the physics homework should take me 5+ hours ... studying for the physics midterm should take me 6-7+hours ... studying for the math midterm should take me 5+ hours ... (*sigh*) ... I have other stuff that week, too ... it's just too painful to think about. Jimminy Cricket! -bj

so. i tried writing music this whole weekend at the retreat. nothing came of it. i think music can only be written when one is inspired to write, or when God just places a song on your heart. i was watching my sister's american idol tape this morning while i was eating breakfast. after watching it, as always, i felt inspired just to sing. i always imagine myself as the next american idol after watching that show ... :-) ... anyhoo, right before i shut off the tv, i saw a news blurb on the war. i went to the piano and just started playing and singing. i came up with these lyrics while at the piano. ***** Safe In My Father's Arms I turn on the news today Seems like the world is going down Seems like you don’t see smiles anymore Seems like everyone can only frown All I see around me Is people dying Hearts breaking Children crying But in this world of hurt and fear One thing still remains clear You're my shelter from the storm From the rain, from the cold And in this world of doubts and fears You will still, You'll still be here You will keep me safe from harm And I'll find rest, and I'll find peace Safe in my Father's arms ***** i dunno. the words just kinda gushed out. i guess this is pretty much how i really feel. although i don't know what's gonna happen in this world, i always take comfort in the fact that i can sleep safe in my Father's arms. shelter me -bj
OH MY GOODNESS! I had the weirdest, most bizarre, most vivid dream of my entire life yesterday! It's probably because I was getting 13 hours of sleep. Anyhoo, I was sitting in this lecture hall with all of these people. A lot of ccsers were there, too. There was some kind of emergency outside so I was in charge of watching everyone. Suddenly I get this phone call. I think it was Stephen on the other end. Anyway, the message was garbled. All I could catch was to get to Sproul plaza as soon as possible because there was some kind of beast. I hurry up and put someone in charge at the lecture hall and I run outside. When I get outside, there are people trying to knock this HUGE, black bear out of a very tall tree. My mom was on top of an enormous ladder using a chain saw to lop of branches so that the bear would fall down. Matt Lee and Jon Q were using norman hand saws to chop branches down. I tried to warn them that if they chopped the branches down, the bear would fall right on top of them. They didn't care. I ran to Sproul. The first thing I noticed when I got to campus was that all of Berkeley had changed. There was a river running through the center of campus. I see a huge crowd of people gathering around this one area of Sproul. I think to myself, "Oh, my. What's the big emergency?" I push to the front of the crowd and there's this cage. I look in and it's a singing bum. I'm like "This is not it ...". Further down I run and finally see what the big commotion was about. On this hill were around twenty tigers. They had both white and orange tigers. Each one being held down by multiple people. This isn't the weird part. They had HUGE floppy, pink ears. It looked like they were wearing plastic bunny ears. I asked someone if it was a prank. It wasn't. Those were their real ears. Very bixarre. Yet, it got weirder. Charles Chen was standing on a boat in the middle of the river throwing knives at the tigers. The tigers would run and catch the knives in their teeth. Apparently we had found this new breed of tigers in the Berkeley hills. Well, Stephen told me they were from Hercules, but I think he meant from the berkeley hills. Weird. -bj

Wow. Just got back from the h2o retreat. what a weekend! so much to blog about. H2O Retreat 2003 He Must Increase Campsite We stayed at Daybreak camp in Felton, CA. It's really close to Santa Cruz. Everyone said that the camp was a lot less nice than previous camps, but that's why the cost was so low. I would call Daybreak camp a wilderness in a small town. We were about five minutes from two safeway stores, but the campsite had plenty of open fields and tree-covered paths. The rooms and bunks The guys stayed in this ugly, run-down building probably about a quarter mile from the main area. It was really stinky. The metal bunks reminded everyone of concentration camps. The floor was uncarpeted hardwood and the bathrooms were a distance from our room. I slept on the top bunk. People were finding spiders and various other ugly objects above their bunks. Luckily I was spared. The girls' room was exactly the same. They could not stand their room so much, though, that they moved to the sponsor cabin which was carpeted and had an indoor bathroom. Half of them just had to sleep on the floor, though. The showers and bathrooms. The bathroom was not too bad. I mean, I've had worse. They had this weird urinal trough, though. It's like peeing into a big bathtub. Quite bizarre. The guys showers were just concrete walls up to your waist. It was untiled and the walls had mold and stuff on it. The guys just decided to use the girls' showers once all the girls finished. The girls' showers were a lot nicer. The stalls were tiled and their were shower curtains. There wasn't much room to shower, and I kept turning off the water whenever I turned around 'cuz my arm would bump the little knoby thingy. There wasn't really room for changing, though, so you had to warn people when you were coming out. There were only four stalls, too, so we had to shower in shifts. I showered with Dave, Erick, and Theo. It was funny. We kept giving each other updates. "I'm taking off my underwear now! I'm totally naked now!" :-) Alaskan Baseball This was ... errr ... an interesting game. Late Night Adventures I didn't bring a flashlight to the retreat, which was a BIG mistake. There were no street lights or anything. Walking back up to our cabin, you could easily fall into some ditch or something because it was pitch black. We usually walked in groups, too, so we wouldn't get lost. Once a group of 6 or 7 of us decided to try walking without a flashlight. Suddenly James yelled "AH! Something's touching me!" We turn on the flashlight and we had all walked into this huge bush thingy. Very funny. Later on, me, matt, and theo, decided to go back to our room to get our shower stuff. We walked a distance and then kinda got freaked out, so we just stopped. Luckily, Toby came walking up the road and escorted us to our room. When we got to our room, we heard this eerie beeping sound from up the hill. It came from another cabin that no one was using. We decided to investigate. We got to the cabin and opened the door. As soon as we opened the door, the beeping stopped. We all got super freaked out. A couple of seconds later, though, the alarm started again. It was only a fire alarm with low batteries. What was freaky, though, was that in the room was a bunk that was enclosed by metal bars. Very freaky. Kinda like a scene from Hannibal. The speaker. Pastor Steve Wong from Fellowship Bible Church in Belmont was our speaker. He was a pretty funny guy. I got to talk to him a lot. He does this very good eeyore impersonation. :-D The messages. The messages were very applicable, I felt. The theme of this retreat was increasing Christ. The theme verse was a verse from John 3 where John the Baptist said "He must increase and I must decrease." I felt Friday's message and Sunday's message were a lot better than the two on Friday, though. The messages were on how to increase Christ by increasing our faith, decreasing our worldy possessions and our desire for them, but pursuing purity, and by witnessing to others. Pretty good stuff. Raving. We broke into our small groups and for some reason, my small groups just start doing a beat-box rave dance. It was HILARIOUS! I LOVE MY CT! We've got an awesome small group. Everyone left their ct to watch ours perform. We usually cracked up before we got to the end of it, though. My job was to wave my hands in the air and make a siren sound with my voice. Amily was hilarious, though. "THE SYSTEM IS DOWN! THE SYSTEM IS DOWN!" ;-) Cooking Lunch. My CT had cooking duties on Friday. We made hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, and smores. We wrapped our smores in aluminum foil and but them on the burners. Unfortunately, all of them got burnt. When people opened the foil, there was a layer of ashes. HAHA. good stuff. Man camp and meat parties. After the message on Friday, we had a campfire where we sang for a LONG TIME and had a good time of sharing with each other. (I was already falling asleep because it was around midnight.) Immediately after the campfire time, we had a meat party. Ben bought pounds and pounds of rib-eye steak. I don't know where H2o got it's obsession for meat. Anyhoo, after our meat party, the guys stayed and had a man-camp, where we just talked for a while about different stuff. We talked with Pastor Steve Wong about girls and relationships and stuff. He and our head sponsor, Steve, gave us some pretty good advice. We also had a chance to ask some Biblical questions that have been bothering us and stuff. We didn't get back to our cabins until about four in the morning. I was pooped. God Time. I woke up at 5:30 in the morning on Saturday morning to meet with Vir to journal and songwrite. Actually, someone's LOUD alarm went off at 5:30. No one turned it off for about five minutes. Anyhoo, Vir was about twenty minutes late so I had some good time alone with God outdoors. It was FREEZING COLD, but I had a really good quiet time with God, there. It was awesome. On Saturday before lunch, we had a scheduled time to walk with God. It was basically an hour set aside just to talk to God, to pray, to meditate ... I think that this was my favorite part of the retreat. I walked to a big open field. No one was around me. The sun was shining and there was a slight breeze. It was perfect. I had a good time to meditate. It's nice just having a chance to sit with God. MMm. Good stuff. Pranks. Pastor Steve Wong was telling us in man camp of all these good pranks to pull on the girls. We decided it was too mean. The girls, instead, end up barging into our room clanging pots and pans and spoons waking all the guys up. That's what we get for being nice guys, eh? Dave suggested that we all walk to breakfast with our flies open as revenge. We decided against it because Gary and Sandy brought their baby, Garrett. :-) Overall impressions. I had a good time of talking and fellowshipping with my fellow h2oers. It was awesome getting to know them better. I also think the messages were timely and applicable. The message on evangelism really struck me, too. I'm so grateful, too, that the weather was so perfect. It only drizzled a little on Sunday morning, but the rest of the retreat was PERFECT. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to go. I then had a good talk with Matt Wu when he drove me home. He's cool. :-D. the system is down. -bj
